On the second day of our visit to the Wadden Sea, after we had relocated from Ribe to Hojer, we crossed over to Romo and walked the flat beaches on the west side and explored the peculiar landscape consisting of sand and bushes on the east. In the evening we participated in a guided tour of the "sort sol" or "black sun" phenomenon, to observe the fascinating process of how a swarm of European Starlings decide where to settle for the night in a marshland. Satisfied with having seen a marvellous "performance" by the birds, we searched for a restaurant nearby on our way back to our lodging in Hojer, Denmark, as the sun had already set and we were quite hungry. Fortunately, just before crossing back into Denmark, we found a cottage-style building serving traditional German food that was still open. We were welcomed warmly by a congenial lady, who seemed to be the proprietor. Despite some difficulty communicating, we managed to order two dishes, a Wiener schnitzel and a breaded pork cutlet garnished with diced vegetables simmered in a tomato-based sauce. After a succession of several Danish meals that were lightly and similarly seasoned, we found the intense flavours of our classic German dishes, which were also very reasonably priced, deeply satisfying.
